Weekends Rock. Going Back to Work Sucks.

Happy Redhead
I'm extending my weekend just a little bit by catching up with LJ and posting a bit about what I was doing all weekend that kept me away from the computer. As is usually the case, when I'm able to get to a computer (which is most weekends), no one posts, but when I don't get to the computer all weekend (as happened this weekend), everyone and their cousin posts. I skimmed. Hopefully I didn't miss anything important. It was totally worth it for a weekend of completely ignoring my responsibilities as an adult-type human being.

On Saturday, I went rafting on the American River. After telling us tales of the fabulous rafting trips she's taken with her family, and hearing us say, "That sounds like SO MUCH FUN!", [info]leiland organized a day trip for the Tuesday night game crew and their significant others. Her father and brother were kind enough to act as guides, and despite some small scares and a big cut for [info]admiralorko, it went smoothly and everyone seemed to have a really great time. I know I did.

I've established that I do need to get a hat if I'm going to do that again though - or really anything that will have me in the sun all day. Apparently my hair is simply not thick enough to protect my scalp, and what I thought was just some slight tenderness yesterday has colored up to a nice, even pink tone over most of my head. Seeing as I'm getting a sense of deja vu as I type that, I suspect I've made this realization before and it just didn't stick in my memory.

So, we got wet and slightly burnt and had splash wars with [info]lairian in the inflatable kayak and swam and taunted each other and generally had a grand time. The Admiral didn't bleed to death (though he did get to have a number of stitches and staples to pull his leg back together after all was said and done) and Lady J didn't bruise her tailbone, so we'll call it a win for the home team I think. :)

And yesterday I went out to the City with [info]gwenrose, [info]lairian, [info]leiland, [info]adnate and [info]ladyj77 to poke around the vintage clothing shops in the Haight. We didn't find a lot of interest to actually spend money on, but there was plenty to drool over and it was a generally pleasant afternoon's ramble. Capped off my evening with dinner with GwenRose and Adnate, and then the season finale of Dr. Who.

The dishes didn't get done. The lawn didn't get mowed. The groceries didn't get bought. But I could care less...I have time to catch up on all that crap and it felt really good to have my little mini-vacation from adulthood. Too bad I had to come back to work today. =)

What did you think about the season finale of Dr. Who? It felt a bit too much like it was written by a fanboi for my tastes, but I'll be sad to see Tennate go...

Have you seen both parts of the finale? If you haven't, I'm not saying a thing about my overall impression because I don't want to give spoilers. (I get the impression from your comment that you've only seen the first half...)

I saw an hour and a half of the finale-- was there more? It certainly _felt_ over...

Well, there was the one hour first half (Stolen Earth) and then the 90 minute second half (Journey's End). Your comment about being sad to see Tennant go threw me off...it's been publicly announced that he's staying in the role.

Overall, I enjoyed the finale. I did have spots that felt like it was a little too much "let's stuff everyone we can into the finale and tie in all of our spin offs and it'll be a big, happy wank-fest", but they managed to explain everything in ways I was ok with and they made me laugh, which is always good.

Good to know that about Tennant! I had heard that the show was going to do about 6 episodes until 2010, when they go back to full schedule-- with a new Dr. If that's wrong: Awesome! If not, I'll still enjoy Tennant. :)

I must say that Donna Noble really grew on me as a companion, but no one is ever going to be as great as Martha Jones was...

I know that they're not coming back with a full season until 2010, but they're slated to do a series of specials in 2009 (I'd heard 4, but that might not include the Christmas specials). The funky schedule is due to Tennant's availability for filming - he's doing a lot of stage work right now.

I thought I'd seen a confirmation that he would definitely be in for Season 5, but I can't find it now.

Donna bugged me from the beginning to the end. She briefly redeemed herself in the second half of the finale, but generally I just never liked her. Martha and Rose however both rocked hardcore. Took me a bit to warm up to Martha, but I like her as a character and rather hope that they are actually bringing her over to Torchwood, which seemed implied at the end of the finale.

I fell for Donna the exact instant (I forget which ep, early in the run, though), when she saw that the Dr. was getting a salute from a general, and insisted on the same treatment. And got it.

She was never intimidated by the huge events surrounding her. She always felt that she had something to contribute, and usually did. Given that she was a no-education london housewife, that was a pretty big deal...

She wasn't intimidated, true, and that was good - but for the most part she just came off as loud, pushy and obnoxious to me. Seemed like everything had to be about HER all the time and she showed very little compassion for other people most of the time. She had her moments (being nice to the birdbrained assistant in "Silence in the Library" for example), but those moments were totally overrun by her bullying her way into everything and insisting that everyone treat her like a queen while simultaneously bitching that she's a nothing temp from Chiswick.

Aw, well, I'm with him. I adored Donna. Then again, I couldn't stand Martha. Maybe that explains a bit why I loved Donna. None of that simpering "Love me, PLEASE! Please love me! Oh, please. Please? I want you to love me!" Oh, no. Right from the start, Donna said "I'm not having any of that!" Good girl. He loves someone else. Leave him be. *nod* I thought Donna was brilliant in how she understood the Doctor by the end. She was the only one who ever challenged his pat answer of "I'm always alright," but in a nice way. Her ending was so sad, just seeing how far she'd grown erased to save her life.

I thought the finale was great. I agree with you in parts about shoving everyone in there, though, but hey, a good fan-wank is fun now and then. ;) I know a lot of people hated Rose's ending, but honestly the only thing I was frustrated about was that he whispered what I wanted to hear in her ear. *pout* Not fair. I've been waiting two seasons for that!

And now that you've watched it, I've been waiting to ask you...

Did you think the ending "battle" seemed rather reminiscent of our Saturday games, defeating the final Big Bad, when all our characters turn into pure awesome? It had that vibe for me for some reason, and I quite enjoyed it.

GRR!
Damn it! I keep getting logged out of LJ, even if I say "remember me". That was me, obviously.

Re: GRR!
Except that Donna DID want him to love her...Every single "oh hell no" protest that she uttered was marred by her constant need to be reassured and supported and needed and loved just as much as his other companions were. At least Martha was honest about it. Martha and Rose were both confident of their own capabilities - Donna was constantly degrading herself and begging for complements. Drove me nuts.

As for what he whispered in Rose's ear -- you can see his lips move if you watch closely. =)

And yes, sort of...though I was laughing too hard to really draw game parallels. =D

Re: GRR!
I dunno, I'm going to go with what the writers and producers say on the love bit. ;)

Oh, I know what he said (I read lips and Julie Gardner was adamant during Doctor Who Confidential that that's exactly what he said. It was adorable. She's such a 'shipper), I just wanted to HEAR it. *pout* RTD is such a tease.

Oh, speaking of Doctor Who Confidential, they showed a MUCH better version of the kiss on that show. I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't use it (it was just...humina...wow), but maybe they felt that because it was a family show, a kiss that passionate couldn't be used. Either that or they wanted to stick with the shorter closeup shot. Though, I think it would have made for a better effect if they had made it clear that Ten v. 2.0 had reciprocated. Ah well.

However, through the magic of video editing, I slapped it into one of my finale videos. *grin* Which reminds me, I need to post those so folks can see them, now that it's aired on Sci Fi. :)

"But I could care less..."

Do you perhaps mean that you 'couldn't care lewss'?

Re: O [pst drunk good.
Knowing me, it's entirely possible that I both could and couldn't care less, depending on the moment...but due to grammar-karma, yes, "couldn't care less" would have been more appropriate. This is what I get for commenting on improper usage of the word "immigrate" in another post. =)
