This sounds like the kind of argument my game groups would get into with their GMs:

A lot of what he says is in line with things I've said in conversations on the subject, which might be why I like what he's putting out there, but it's still a good read.
When you're 12, getting both Park Place and Boardwalk in a game of Monopoly is justification for your sibling to punch you (twice...in the gut as I recall). When you're in your 50s, it's just another case of abuse.

Apparently there's a lawyer (yeah, no shock there) pushing a proposal to create a sort of "higher education bailout" program - he's pushing for complete forgiveness of all student loans.
Now, I'm as greedy as the next red-blooded American consumer, but somehow this seems...off somehow. I've got plenty of friends who have paid off their student loans, or never had them to begin with, who are in much more desperate financial straits than I am. While it would be nice to not have 10% of my monthly gross income (minimum) going to loan payments for an extended part of the next decade, it seems unfair to benefit just because I went for a graduate degree, didn't manage to pay my loans off quickly, etc.
Of course I think such a proposal has around ZERO chance of really being taken seriously, but it's interesting that it was presented and I would hope that if it does gain some traction, there will be attention to the fact that it wouldn't really benefit some of the people who have the most need of relief right now.

I'm not usually much for embedding video in my LJ - mostly because I only watch about 10% of the videos that get posted on my f-list since I'm usually at work and don't want to share with my coworkers. However, RoseRed32 posted these and they made me laugh, so I'm passing them on:

I don't pretend to understand the stock market or investment banking, which makes the current financial crisis a little baffling for me. I'm trying to understand it more fully so that I can have an informed opinion about what's happening, what the government is (or isn't) doing about it or should (or shouldn't) do and, most importantly, how it's going to affect me.
I came across this article - 15 Things You Need to Know About the Panic of 2008 - through a blog I follow semi-regularly, and I found it to be really helpful in understanding exactly what happened.
So...if you're like me - strongly opinionated, but slightly confused - you might find it interesting reading.

Snoopy sent me this link to "Thirty Facts About Alton Brown" done in the style of the Chuck Norris factoids that circulated a while back. It's hilarious! =D
#6. In the first, as-yet-unaired episode of Iron Chef America, Alton Brown single-handedly defeated an all-star team of Bobby Flay, Cat Cora, and Hiroyuki Sakai. The secret ingredient was 'whimsy'.

Ok, this is pretty damned cool -- the next generation of solar technology uses "nanosolar" sheets to improve power output and significantly lower power costs.
Another article indicated that this technology could make solar power cheaper than burning coal for electrical production.

This guy is running for state representative in Kansas. He made me laugh -- a LOT. I'm totally ok with tossing $8.34 at him for the amusement and to encourage anyone who likes XKCD this much. =D
And seriously, even if you don't want to give him money, the link is freaking hilarious. Go read it!

Before I head into a meeting I'm not in the least bit prepared for but will bullshit my way through... *sigh*
For those who have been waking up, choking and wondering "What's burning?"...apparently the answer is "the entire state of California."
Other than that, I've been attempting to be productive about jewelry making again, since I've had some projects languishing. For those who like to see what I've been up to, poke over to my DeviantArt page. (I'm too lazy to do a proper post with pictures right now.)
And thanks to a couple things I found on DevArt, I now have the desire to make chain mail belts. Several of them. In differing patterns, widths and designs. *sigh* Guess I'll add that to my list of "maybe I'll get back to this idea eventually" projects.
