We tried this on a Friday night and the group that sat through "Barbarella", "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter", "Cannibal: The Musical" and even the bad-even-for-the-Hoff movie "The Adventures of Stella Star" couldn't get through the Star Wars Christmas Special (even with Riff-Trax!).

Ok, actually, "For MATHEMATICS!!!"

Snoopy and I have been playing online chess. Really, we've been playing a LOT of online chess. Right now I'm on a horrible losing streak (yes, Adnate, he stepped up and the 5 game win record I had is now crushed.)

I was looking at our win-loss records for the games we've played and realized something....we have a Fibonacci Sequence going.

1 win for me
1 win for him
2 wins for me
3 wins for him
5 for me

I need to lose a couple more games for 8 consecutive losses, but then I get to win 13 games in a row! Right? It's for math after all... :D

I'm currently enjoying day 2 of my annual "avoid the office birthday celebrations" vacation time. (Not that I actually avoided anything this year - my co-workers have gotten wise to me and brought a card and breakfast goodies on Friday.) Doing another "stay-cation" this year, but I'm thinking that next year I need to go somewhere. Originally, I was thinking I'd be buying myself a house for my 35th, but since I got to that THIS year, I think using my passport would be an appropriate way to celebrate next year.

So far, the week has entailed a good bit of time on my bike (YAY!), some projects within the house and the decision to completely rework how we set up the front room and library. There will be moving of furniture at some point. There will also be cataloging and sorting of books, music, movies and comics since we finally got software for that and a scanner is on the way. (Yes Snoopy, this means I really need to remember to return your toys and thank you for the loan. =D )

Since I can't work on making jewelry (soon...it will be soon...it will or I will go crazy), I've decided to get my existing pieces organized. The necklace/earring rack I made for myself a few years back has been broken in the course of multiple moves and no longer holds everything anyhow. Right now, I'm waiting for the glue to dry on part of their replacement, and then I will get my room organized. (I will. I will. I will!)

Shar and I finally watched Torchwood: Children of Earth yesterday as well. Cut for spoilers in case I'm not the last person to have seen this. )

Other than home projects and television, I haven't been up to much of anything lately - which results in a general lack of posting. Work has been quiet-ish, but we should be heading into the busy season as soon as I get back next week, so for now, I'm just going to enjoy not having to be up early and having time to do what ever I feel like for a week.

Snoopy posted his pictures and there's a few others appearing. As I find better ones, I'll update, but in the meantime, here's his shot of the X-Group. All hail Kryolan, for it makes me blue (and green in prior years) and fun all over. :)

BayCon 2009 - Quick recap

I've been delaying my annual BayCon post - Monday I was (predictably) exhausted and would have fallen asleep over my keyboard if I'd tried to spend time on the computer and yesterday I was trying to pretend that I was getting work done. Today I've given up on that work concept for a bit (it really is just that quiet this week) and get on with it before I forget all the high points of the weekend.

This won't be the usual "OMG!! SO AWESOME!! *SQUEEEEEE*" post that I usually do, because while it was a GOOD weekend, it was also very...quiet. I know a lot of folks have used "quiet" to describe the Con this year, and in my case, I think it's because I wasn't disappointed with the weekend, but it was sort of slow by comparison to other years. The overall energy level of the convention just wasn't there.

However, this was the first time that Shar has come out with me, which proved to be quite enjoyable, and I got to introduce him to all the wonderful folks that I really only see at Con for one reason or another. There was also a higher percentage of the "Family" in attendance as well, which was awesome.

So without further ado, the high points: )

Costume is ready and in a bag. The major accessories are even "Seaweasel Approved" - which basically means that she squealed and wants to steal the belt I made. Tonight I will pack and tomorrow I'll be headed off for a weekend of geek-bliss. =)

***FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY WANT CRASH SPACE***

I have had a few people express interest in taking up some of the space in my room. At present, I'm not sure how committed any of you are. Therefore, I'm giving priority to: [info]adnate, [info]fishknifeseller and [info]leiland (and Lairian if he shows up, but I'm under the impression he has no interest in such shenanigans).

Should things wind up with a need to rearrange, or make the room unisex, I may poke Snoopy and Dr. No about taking Adnate in exchange for GwenRose, but that can be determined at the Con.

Other cuddlesluts may be welcomed depending on how much space I have, comfort level of those in the room and proper bribes.

If you will be there and know you would like some space (and don't mind possibly sleeping on the floor or in an over crowded bed), let me know so I have a head's up please!

Productivity today was partially scrapped in favor of seeing the new Star Trek movie. Yes, I know...opening weekend...I said Shar wouldn't want to...I was wrong. I was wrong about several things.

I was really hesitant - really, really, really hesitant - about this movie. I figured I'd end up seeing it because Shar wanted to and I do like Trek, but I really expected it to suck. Even after hearing my friends tell me that it was amazing. I expected iTrek, Wormhole Xtreme, Galaxy Quest with a good effects budget...I expected it to suck and be a horrible revision of my youth.

Oh my god was I wrong. I was so very very wrong.

By the time the credits rolled I was honestly speechless. I'm still not quite sure what to say about it. It was...just...WOW. WOW.

And for the record, it truly scares me how similar Sylar and Spock really are - not just because the same actor has done both roles, but because if Spock were a homicidal maniac, he'd be Sylar.

Also, Zachary Quinto...really hot.

Watchmen

The group got together last night to see Watchmen. Thanks to [info]gwenrose's kind loan, I was able to read the graphic novel this week before seeing the movie, which helped since I knew NOTHING about the story. (Although the two or three people in our group who hadn't read it before the movie didn't seem to have much trouble following the action.)

Without giving any spoilers, it was a remarkably faithful rendition of the main story line of the graphic novel, with the exception that I'm not sure how I feel about how they modified ... well, I guess that would be a spoiler. :P

Ok, this is pretty damned cool -- the next generation of solar technology uses "nanosolar" sheets to improve power output and significantly lower power costs.

Another article indicated that this technology could make solar power cheaper than burning coal for electrical production.

I think I may have a minor addiction problem with RockBand. It was one of the first things I thought about this morning.

Or that might be because Shar picked up a second guitar controller last night (as we'd discussed him doing) and it's sitting in the living room.

It could also be that I'm particularly enjoying the game mostly due to having so far played exclusively with two people who really enjoy it as well and don't seem to mind my singing, even when I'm sight reading and doing a shit job of it. It really helps the confidence level when trying songs I've never even heard of to know that I'm not going to have people wincing and reaching for ear plugs as I flounder through weird rhythms and tonal changes.

And there's a certain amusement value in looking forward to sticking my friends in front of the game and watching what they can do. =)

However, I think it's probably the only thing I've posted about for the last week, so maybe it's an addiction after all. *shrug*

At least it's not interfering with getting other things done. I've managed to get the housework I wanted to do before game done (although I should sweep the deep end of the pool this weekend), and now I just need to get dressed and I can indulge my new addiction if I so choose.

Dark Knight

We went to see Dark Knight last night.

It's been a long time since I saw a movie that makes me want to see it again and again and again in the theatres, but this is definitely one of them.

Unlike a lot of folks, it didn't really freak me out or make me shiver while I was watching it, but there's a sort of cumulative effect to the whole thing, and the more I think about it the more it makes me shudder and grin and get all excited to see it again.

Christian Bale has firmly cemented himself as "Best Batman Ever" in my opinion - not just because he's an amazing Batman, but also because he's a really amazing Bruce Wayne as well. None of the other actors I've seen can manage such a seamless transition between the two halves of that personality.

And Heath Ledger...*sigh* Seriously, I know I'm a fan girl and I know that I may be colored by having always liked his work, but oh my god was his Joker good. I don't think I'd say that he was better that Nicholson, just because you really can't compare them. Nicholson was what the first movie needed because it was a bright color comic movie. It wouldn't have worked in this dark new Gotham that Christopher Nolan has built. Ledger's interpretation however is just creepy and utterly perfect for the dark tone that's been set. It's got this cumulative effect that results in this uncanny, frightening, psychopathic portrayal that is all the evil things in the night rolled into one.

That laugh...god...that _laugh_ is freaking haunting. *shudder*

I want to go watch it again.

Edited to add: Am I weird that I wasn't freaked out by the Joker immediately? Seems to be a pervasive reaction in other posts (not just from women) about the need to duck or flinch or otherwise express terror at various points in the movie. I didn't have that reaction. I had more of an avid, "what's going to happen next?" reaction. Am I just a sick f&*k?

Wanker's Cramp

Oh my lord...

We've managed to unlock the entire song list for Rockband, except for a few bonus songs. I think we probably put in about 6-7 hours of game time total.

At this point Shar and Lairian both have a bad case of wanker's cramp and I am working on a lovely 976 number phone sex voice bordering over into scary lady trucker.

Leiland, Poeso and Killian also helped with the process of nearly killing ourselves. We've now played so much with enough people that we've established a new house rule -- if you sing along in the background on a song when you aren't on the mic, you have to step up and sing it.

Keep that in mind if you visit.

I'm learning the fine art of mumbling the lyrics as I try to follow the rhythm and tone of any given song. This seems to work pretty well and got me through any number of things I've never heard before -- but I still refuse to do vocals on Sabotage again.

Apparently I sound about 80% like Trent Reznor and 60ish% like David Bowie...but I sound 100% like Anthony Keidis. (Nailed "Dani California" on medium on the first try. *is smug*)

So now I'm going to finish my cup of tea and try to sound a little less...throaty. =)

Yesterday afternoon I shocked Shar.

You would think that after 14 years of relationship and all the crap we've put each other through during that time, this would not be an easy feat - you'd probably be right. So what could I possibly do that would shock him at this point?
Yes...I really am this impulsive on occasion )

for Angelina Jolie fetishism... *drools*

Shar and I just got back from catching a showing of Wanted and if you'll pardon the pun, it's EXACTLY what I wanted in that movie.

Cool cars, a VERY hot chick, a few hot guys, explosions, chases and copious amounts of gun-fu.

And one of the best last lines I've heard in a very long time.

I was smiling all the way home. (Ok...so I've been smiling all day...but I was smiling particularly widely all the way home.)
