So, it's supposed to jump from a "balmy" 91 degrees for the high tomorrow to hit triple digits for the first time this summer on Saturday. Then it'll drop back down a bit on Sunday.
Translation: Mother Nature heard I was moving and cranked the thermostat for the moving crew.
Apparently I have a gift for moving on the hottest weekend of any given month. I seem to recall this happening the last couple of times we moved during summer as well.
I'm adding "Get cases of water" to my to-do list for tomorrow - and must remember to find the box where I packed the sunscreen.

I'm extending my weekend just a little bit by catching up with LJ and posting a bit about what I was doing all weekend that kept me away from the computer. As is usually the case, when I'm able to get to a computer (which is most weekends), no one posts, but when I don't get to the computer all weekend (as happened this weekend), everyone and their cousin posts. I skimmed. Hopefully I didn't miss anything important. It was totally worth it for a weekend of completely ignoring my responsibilities as an adult-type human being.
On Saturday, I went rafting on the American River. After telling us tales of the fabulous rafting trips she's taken with her family, and hearing us say, "That sounds like SO MUCH FUN!",
leiland organized a day trip for the Tuesday night game crew and their significant others. Her father and brother were kind enough to act as guides, and despite some small scares and a big cut for
admiralorko, it went smoothly and everyone seemed to have a really great time. I know I did.
I've established that I do need to get a hat if I'm going to do that again though - or really anything that will have me in the sun all day. Apparently my hair is simply not thick enough to protect my scalp, and what I thought was just some slight tenderness yesterday has colored up to a nice, even pink tone over most of my head. Seeing as I'm getting a sense of deja vu as I type that, I suspect I've made this realization before and it just didn't stick in my memory.
So, we got wet and slightly burnt and had splash wars with
lairian in the inflatable kayak and swam and taunted each other and generally had a grand time. The Admiral didn't bleed to death (though he did get to have a number of stitches and staples to pull his leg back together after all was said and done) and Lady J didn't bruise her tailbone, so we'll call it a win for the home team I think. :)
And yesterday I went out to the City with
gwenrose,
lairian,
leiland,
adnate and
ladyj77 to poke around the vintage clothing shops in the Haight. We didn't find a lot of interest to actually spend money on, but there was plenty to drool over and it was a generally pleasant afternoon's ramble. Capped off my evening with dinner with GwenRose and Adnate, and then the season finale of Dr. Who.
The dishes didn't get done. The lawn didn't get mowed. The groceries didn't get bought. But I could care less...I have time to catch up on all that crap and it felt really good to have my little mini-vacation from adulthood. Too bad I had to come back to work today. =)

On Saturday I participated in the Relay for Life event in Santa Clara with a group of friends. Kudos to our team leader,
gwenrose for keeping us organized and scheduled for our times on the track, and huge thanks to all who donated, both through my collection and to my team. I believe Gwen told me that we exceeded our team goal of $2,000.
And for those of you who heard (or saw) that I attempted to kill myself with sunshine...I'm fully recovered now from my O.D.
The sun and I have always had a slightly abusive relationship. As most anyone who's ever met me knows, I adore the sunshine. I bask in the summer heat and glory in 90+ degree weather.
Unfortunately, with my ultra-pale northern European coloring, the sun has not always been so gentle with me. I've learned, through years of sunburns, to be assiduous about coating myself with a high SPF sunscreen anytime I'll be in the sun for more than about 15 minutes. I drink lots of water. I do what I can to keep my sun-worship from becoming ritual sacrifice...
But sometimes I fail...and I never know when this is going to happen because (as I've vocally and repeatedly complained to most all who saw me fall to the sun this Saturday) I can't predict it. I can't simply say "Wow...it's 110 degrees. I'll get heat stroke if I do anything outside today." or "Gee...it's really dry. I better get some extra water." I do heavily physically active things in 100+ degree heat on a regular basis every summer, sometimes in such over dressed states as wearing jeans, and usually suffer no ill effects. Then I'll have a day where it's in the 90s (like Saturday) and suddenly everything shuts down.
Obviously, I find this frustrating. I don't particularly like abusing myself that way, nor am I pleased at having screwed up one of my key chances to be social over the weekend by attempting to mummify myself. And I feel even worse that I managed to do this in a situation where anyone might have worried about me...I much prefer to be an idiot without an audience. =S
So thank you to those who've checked in, and those who plied me with water and cool shirts and reminded me to drink my juice and to eat...I'm sorry it was necessary. I'll be more sensible next year, I swear. (Mostly because I doubt any of you would let me try that again...)
